Prejudice and Tolerance:
The novel called “Ask me no questions” written by Marina Budhos,approaches several themes which are relevant on nowadays. There are a lot of people who judge a book for its cover not for its content and falls into something we may know as prejudice. When we havea prejudgment or we make an assumption about someone or something before having adequate knowledge to be able to do so with guaranteed accuracy we are being biased and not practicing tolerance. Thestory takes place in The United States of America, after the terrorist attempt that occurred on September 11th. After this day, lot of things changed, the people became more apprehensive and to be anemigrant on those days wasn’t easy. “We watched the news of the war and saw ourselves as others saw us: dark, flitting shadows, grenades blooming in our fists. A long the book, there aresome clear examples of prejudice that the family of Nadira, the principal character need faced. However they were not the only ones. They are one of the million cases of emigrants who needed to sufferthis type of discrimination. This book exposes all the things they do in order to fit into a foreign culture. Some examples as follows: change the way they dress, learn a new language, costumes, amongothers. But sometimes this is not enough, the problem goes beyond their control, the prejudice occasionally comes from former experiences that has turn into a labeling system of cultures, behaviors,thinking, religions, etc. Using this labeling system has been the consequence from which, people doesn’t care to know a person really, letting the feelings towards something or someone be guided byprejudices, generalizing everyone. “All the brown people are the same to them”
