Lately, in Mexico, the state of Michoacan has had a negative image as the result of the violence provoked by the organizedcrime. And this is the main reason because the chain of Ice Cream shops in Mexico “La Michoacana” announced that it is in the process of changing their name into “La Tucumbita”.
The origin of the name“La Tucumbita” is that the company started in the municipality of Tocumbo in Michoacán, in the early forties. The first ice cream makers of the region created their own recipes based in naturalfruits, characteristic that has always been an icon of the franchises. With the purpose of extending the ice cream and popsicles, they increased the number of shops in popular squares and malls, until theybecame popular all around the country.
At first, the franchises didn’t have a logo that recognized themselves, so at the middle-nineties Alejandro Andrade Andrade proposed the image of a girlallusive to the region (dressed with the indigenous typical clothes of Michoacan) with a popsicle in her hand in pink, black and white colors. That logo changed in a positive way the sales, because nowpeople would be more confident of buying in a known shop with their favorite flavors.
Today, Alejandro Andrade Andrade has become the Main Director of the company, and he also started a backgroundbusiness of Ice Cream equipment for shops and training courses for people start their own franchises of “La Michoacana” or even their own brand.
But the company has always dealed with the problem ofpiracy; a lot of shops that want fast success and sales often claim their own Ice cream and popsicle shops as part of “La Michoacana” chain when they are not from it. In numbers, it is said that fromthe nearly Thirty thousand Ice cream shops that exist in Mexico operating with the name of “La Michoacana” , only ten thousand or less are in fact.
