Chapter 20
Zorba has had very bad experiences in his past when he was at war in Crete. Being there with The Boss causes him pain when he reminisces his past. Whentelling his boss the gruesome experiences he went through, he also speaks of the positive mentality he now has thanks to those bad times.
While Zorba was at war he learned that people should not bejudged on nationality but rather on their charcater.
Zorba became a man when he found his own deliverence.
Zorba feels sorry for all men.
The narrator is suddenly enlightened with the teachingsof Zorba the very next day “Opposite me on the sand, a small clump of thorny bushes, which had been a miserable dull color the day before, was now covered with tiny White blossoms.” The narrator issurprised to find that it is the season of Spring which excites him. Zorba celebrates with him excitedly and this symbolizes his happiness for the rebirth of himself after the life lessons Zorba hastaught him.
The narrator quotes Marcus Aurelius which is an astronomer. The significance of this man is the intelligence he carries and the knowledge of his work by the narrator.
Chapter 21The butterfly landing on Zorba’s moustache relates to the character because the blossoming of the narrator cannot be forced, it has to be done naturally . The butterfly flying onto his moustache isa clear foreshadow of the narrator missing the point of his life teachings by Zorba.
The hedonism example is when Zorba decides to start dancing with his boss although the boss doesnt want to.Zorba is happy and is enjoying a pleasurable moment in which he wants to share with his boss.
Zorba’s view of sin and God is that they’re both “The same thing”.
The two major shifts include thenarrator slowly becoming content with his self- being and his worries are slowly beginning to dissolve.
