Vocabulary of Concepts
1.integrers: A number with no fractional part.Includes
the counting numbers {1, 2, 3, ...}, zero {0}, and the
negative of the counting numbers {-1, -2, -3, ...}You
canwrite them down like this: {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2,
3, ...}
Examples of integers: -16, -3, 0, 1, 198

2.opposites: The number line goes on forever in both
directions. This is indicated by thearrows.
Examples of opposites: the number line above, +3 and
-3 are labeled as opposites

3.absolute value: How far a number is from zero.

Examples of absolute value: Example "6" is 6 away
fromzero, but "-6" is also 6 away from zero.So, the
absolute value of 6 is 6, and the absolute value of 6 is also 6.The symbol "|" is placed either side to

mean "Absolute Value", so we can write: |-6| =6
4.additive inverses: What you add to a number to get
zero. The negative of a number.

Example of additive:The additive inverse of -5 is 5,
because -5 + 5 = 0. The additive inverse of +5 is -5as
well.

5.order of operations: The rules of which calculation
comes first in an expression
They are: do everything inside parentheses first: ()
then do exponents, like x2then do multiplies anddivides from left to right. lastly do the adds and
subtracts from left to right

Example of order of operations:
5 × (3 + 4) - 2 × 8 = 5 × 7 - 2 × 8 = 35 - 16 = 19

6.distributive property:Multiply the term in front
of the parenthesis by each of the terms inside the
parenthesis.
Example of distributive property:
a(b+c)=ab+ac

7.mean: The mean is the average of the numbers: acalculated "central" value of a set of numbers.

Example of mean: what is the mean of 2, 7 and 9?
Add the numbers: 2 + 7 + 9 = 18 Divide by how many
numbers (i.e. we added 3 numbers): 18 ÷ 3 = 6 So theMean is 6
