Al publicar la entrevista que le realizó a Pinochet, Jon Lee Anderson le "avisó" almundo que el general retirado se encontraba en Londres. Por eso algunos lo culpan. A comienzos de 1998, Jon Lee Anderson publicó en la revista The New Yorker un extenso perfil-entrevista de Augusto Pinochet. Había logrado algo imposible: que Lucía, la hija mayor, convenciera al senador vitalicio de que este destacado periodista norteamericano, autor del libro Che, una biografía, era un hombreconfiable. En agosto de 1998 Anderson y Pinochet se reunieron en cuatro oportunidades en la casa santiaguina de Marco Antonio, el hijo menor del ex Comandante en Jefe del Ejército. Pero quedó pendiente un pequeño detalle: la sesión fotográfica para ilustrar la historia que debía realizarse en Santiago fue abortada por los ayudantes militares de Pinochet.
