Malik Williams Character Analysis

“Perhaps if you could spell as well as you could run, you'd be better off”. Malik’s academic and in-track life is parallel with a marathon. For a runner, 26miles (one marathon) is a long and challenging race. It can be tiring, frustrating and overwhelming. The same is experienced by freshmen in college. When they start, they are full of indecision andignorance. However, Malik’s e college experience has three distinct stages. First, when he started as runner and student starts off slowly or behind. As if he wanted to conserve energy. Nevertheless,he didn’t realize at the beginning that he had to start strong and filled with energy. Second, after Malik had some issues with professor Phipps’ class and in-track, he had to try to cut the lead orgain momentum for not staying behind. Finally, when Malik faced his problems and worked hard to solve them, he crossed the finish line strong and with pride.

“Without struggle, there is noprogress”. The first time that Malik tried new challenges he failed. When Malik wrote his first couple essays, he did not do well at all. His essays had weak structure, grammar and vocabulary. He evenearned a “D” on his first paper because of grammar issues. On the other hand, the same occurred when he ran for the first time. He was an irresponsible athlete, never dressing in uniform; neitherstretching before racings. During his first race, he lets his team down and he disappointed the entire team, similar to his poor grades.

After comparing Malik’s academic and in-track life with amarathon, the challenge began. “What does that have to do with your ability to place a comma in its proper place or put a period at the end of a sentence, hmmm?” Malik starts with a lost mind; he does notknow how to manage the obstacles ahead. However, after realizing he was in so many problems, he turns to professor Phipps for help. Professor Phipps advised Malik that his athletic life has nothing...
