There is a song by Katie Melua that says “the line between wrong and right is the width of the thread from a spiders web.” Someone can take a decision thinking it is the right one, while someone elsecan think the complete opposite. We can see an example of this in the book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and the movie adaptation by Milos Forman. In these two pieces we have NurseRatched who believes that she is helping the men at the asylum and R.P. McMurphy who does not like the way she controls the men. The narrator, Chief Bromden, tells the reader that “the Big Nurse tendsto get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate, precision-made machine” ( Kesey 25). Throughout the book Chief Bromden keeps comparing Nurse Ratched with amachine.
Sometimes people feel that in order for them to do their job better they need to get their emotions out of the way. This can be true in some cases but there is a limit to the amount of emotionsthe person should get rid of. In their article, “Different Generations Review
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Milos Forman” Deborah J. Boschini and Norman L. Keltner explain that “it was her [NurseRatched] job to remain calm and not respond emotionally to challenges from patients” (76). However, Miss. Ratched had put all of her emotions to the side that she was unable to function with reason.In the movie we hear Miss. Ratched saying that “the best thing we can do is go on with our daily routine” (Forman). She does not like to change the schedule for any reason. Also, according to Boschiniand Norman, “Nurse Ratched’s respect for rules and routines is common among nurses and is an integral component of nursing standards” (76). However, there is a difference between respecting rules androutines and not wanting to break the monotony with something that might be helpful for the patients.
Nurse Ratched is trying to fix the men at the asylum; unfortunately, her ways of fixing man...
