Mafalda
Mafalda is a comic strip written and drawn by Argentine cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado, better known by his pen name Quino. The strip features a 6-year-old girl named Mafalda, who is deeply concerned about humanity and world peace and rebels against the actual state of the world. The strip ran from 1964 to 1973 and was very popular in Latin America, Europe, Quebec and in Asia.
Thename “Mafalda” describes a consistent person, who is expressed in straight line, is attentive to detail and safety. Is a person who loves what she said and confirmed it safely.
History
Quino, or Joaquín Salvador Lavado, was born on 17 July 1932 in Mendoza (Argentina). In the 40's, when he was 13 and 16 years old, he lost his parents. After finishing his primary studies he decided to enroll inthe Fine Arts School of Mendoza, which he would abandon years later to devote himself to drawing cartoons and humour.
In 1954, he went to live to Buenos Aires and started to visit offices of every newspaper and magazine looking for a job. The magazine “Esto es” was what published his first page of graphic humour.
In 1960 he married with Alicia Colombo and went to Rio de Janeiro for theirhoneymoon (it was his first international trip). Quino and his wife lived in Milan, Italy for several years before returning to Argentina. He did not have any children.
Mafalda began to run in the weekly newspaper “Primera plana” (front page) on 29 September 1964.
One week later, Mafalda started appearing daily in Buenos Aires' Mundo. At first it only featured Mafalda and her parents. The charactersof Felipe, Manolito, Susanita and Miguelito were created in the following weeks, and Mafalda's mother was pregnant when the newspaper shut down on 22 December 1967.
Jorge Alvarez Editor published the second book of Mafalda under the title of “That's the thing, Mafalda”.
The following year appear "Mafalda" 3 and "Mafalda 4". Thirty strips are included in an anthology of literary texts andhumorous drawings have been translated into Italian
In 1969 "Mafalda 5" appears in the Argentina and edit the first book abroad in Italy, "Mafalda la Contestataria".
In 1970 editions De La Flor publishes "Mafalda 6" and Spain, launches the first book of Mafalda and censorship of the Francoist Government forces publishers to put a strip at the top that says «for adults». Also in Portugal "Mafalda" ispublished under the label Dom Quixote. In the following years are edited books "Mafalda 7" and "8 Mafalda".
On 25 June 1973 Quino goodbye formally to the readers of "Seven days" and will not draw new Mafalda strips. Quino will be publishing in that weekly pages of humor that hitherto published "Panorama". The first books of Mafalda in France and in Germany with little impact are also published.In 1974 “La Flor” launches the last collection of Mafalda strips: "10 Mafalda" and Quino makes his first trip to United States.
In 1979 in France, Editions Glénat publishes the first book of Mafalda color.
In 1986 for the first time published a book of humor in United States: "The world of Quino"
To celebrate the twenty-five years of the publication of the first strip of Mafalda, in 1989Ediciones de La Flor "Mafalda Inédita" displays an exhibition of original drawings and documents organized in the Teatro San Martin of Buenos Aires.
In 1991 “La flor” launches “10 Años with Mafalda” and the next year “The Whole Mafalda” (that was the las edition).
The "Mafalda" square, located in the neighborhood of College as one of the many honors to Quino is inaugurated in Buenos Aires in 1994.Quino adapting Mafalda for cinema and theater; two series of animated shorts featuring Mafalda have been produced. The first was produced by Daniel Mallo for Argentine television starting in 1972. The second was in 1993, directed by a Cuban filmmaker, Juan Padrón, who was a close friend of Quino.
