Internet es, como tantas otras tecnologías innovadoras, un invento militar. Nació del interés del ejército estadounidense en los años sesenta por lograr comunicacionesfiables y descentralizadas. Es decir, por evitar que un misil bien dirigido pudiera hacer saltar por los aires un centro vital de comunicaciones.

Fue en 1969 cuando DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) y Rand Corporation desarrollaron una forma de enviar y recibir información basada en paquetes conmutados. Esta red, que únicamente comunicaba unas pocas computadoras, se bautizócomo DARPANET. Investigadores del prestigioso MIT dieron a luz el germen de lo que sería el sistema de transferencia de archivos FTP. El investigador del MIT Lawrence G. Roberts, junto a Thomas Merrill, consigue en 1965 conectar por primera vez dos ordenadores a distancia usando una línea telefónica.
