For centuries European countriessetout explorers and adventurers who changed people’s lives on every continent in the world. Now,those same countries are worried that their way of life is going to be changed by foreigners. Immigration and racial integration are serious problems in Europe, and many Europeans are wondering about whatis going to happen in the future. Britain, France.And Germany all has significant numbers of immigrants. Britain has 1.9 million, who come from its former colonies in the Caribbean, Asia and Africa.Germany has 3.9 million ´Gastarbeiter’ (guest workers) , who come from a number of poorer European countries and Turkey. France has 2 million ‘Travailleurs Immigrés’ (immigrant workers), who come fromits former colonies in North Africa.
In Britain, About 3.4% of the population of 56 million is immigrants; not a large percentage but most of them are concentrated in a few large cities. They livetogether in special areas called ghettos, where they try to preserve their native culture: in British cities, such as London and Birmingham, one can see mosques (Muslim temples), Indian shops andPakistani restaurants. There is one area of London (Notting Hill) which has its own Caribbean style carnival every year.
However, the children of immigrants do not always want to follow their parent’scustoms and traditions. They are British, and want to do what other young British people do. They are very surprised when they are rejected for being foreign. This rejection makes them disillusionedwith Britain, and some even try to live in the country where their parents came from.
We are not sure what is going to happen to the European immigrant communities. Perhaps they will become part of thesociety of the countries where they live, or perhaps they will become even more isolated. Still, one thing is certain.
