Over 500 years ago slavery was brought to North American Continent. Many of the slaves were African American. Although the U.S.A had theDeclaration of Independent, the government did not respect the fact that all men and women are equal. In 1776 the constitution was passed which it created the Bill of Rights but not for the African American.All of this lead to slavery in North America and also led to Underground Railroad. Some of the famous abolitionist who risks their life to save Africans from slavery was Harriet Tubman, FrederickDouglass, and William Still.
Harriet Tubman was a young girl who ran away from home. She also helped people escape from slavery she had to cross to south 19 times. Harriet saved 100’s of people and40,000 bounties. When Tubman had first escape she would trek through the woods because when she was small she had suffered a head injury that led her to blackouts. Harriet herd that her niece andchildren would soon be sold she harried up and arrange to meet them in Baltimore and take them to North freedom. Harriet Tubman was never capture and she went to serve as a spy, scout and a nurse for theunion Army. The government refused to give her pension for her service Tubman had to sell vegetables and fruit door to door in order to live.
Frederick Douglass was born a slave, and with hisstrength of character he had and also with great intelligence had transformed himself into one of America’s foremost citizens. Frederick Douglass was a great lecturer, editor, author, reformer, bankpresident ambassador, right advocate and he was the friend and advisor of President Lincoln. Frederick Douglass would work, work, and work even in the worst weather. Covey would send sixteen-year-oldDouglass out to work and then hide in ditches or behind trees and fence posts.
