Why study History
History – Greek meaning “to discover”, “research”
Studies the events performed by humans in the past. Helps us understand human society.
The purpose of studyinghistory is to acquire knowledge to form an analytical and critical idea to understand the present, and to understand or modify the future.
History is helped by geography, social studies and chronology, soit is easier to understand.
To be able to perform a historical research, we must use documents, objects and testimonials known as sources.
Sources can be direct or commemorative, and indirect, inwhich people that thell you the story weren’t really there.

Greece Civilization
1750 B.C. – 133 B.C.
- Minoans: Near the waters of Aegean Sea, Crete was home of an early civilization.
- Success of Minoans based ontrade, not conquest.
- Greatest success between 1600 B.C. to 1500 B.C.
- In 1400 B.C. the Minoan civilization disappeared, maybe because of the Mycenaean (the first Greek-speaking people)
- Mycenaeancivilization conquered the Aegean Sea from 1400 B.C. to 1200 B.C. Like the Minoans, the Mycenaean were sea traders.
- Mycenaean is known for the Trojan War around 1250 B.C., economic conflictbetween the Mycenae and Troy.
- Epic poems Iliad and Odyssey, written by Homer.
- Greeks developed new ideas to govern each polis or city – states.
- Between 750 B.C. and 500 B.C. Greece had differentgovernments. At first there was a monarchy, then an aristocracy, as result an oligarchy appeared, leading finally to a democracy.
- Greeks were polytheistic, believing in more than one god. Zeus wasthe most powerful god.
- Pericles developed a direct democracy, and took Greece to their golden ages. He was a wise and skillful leader.

Roman Civilization
509 B.C. – 476 A.C.
