There scene in the book when we can clearly see how John Proctor rejects Abigail. “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But Iwill cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby (pg. 23).” Proctor wants to take Abigail out of his life, and look for his wife’s trust again.Elizabeth is not so sure about this and she wants proof of this, so she asked Proctor to confess what she knew about the girls. “I think you must go to Salem, John. I think so. You must tell him it’s afraud (pg. 53).” She needs him to confess to stop the unnecessary accusations and to prove her that he has no feelings for Abigail and can do something to make her pay for her sins.
Towards the endof the play Proctor has no other choice but to confess his sin. Abigail denied everything so the only way to prove this was right or wrong was to hear it from Elizabeth. They brought her to the court;the only thing she needed to say was that she knew that her husband had had an affair with Abigail Williams. She almost confessed that: “I to think he fancied her. And so one night I lost my wits, Ithink, and put her out on the highroad (pg. 113).” She kind of admitted it, but not completely.
