“Ain’t I A Woman?”

Slavery had just ended in the South during the 1860’s. Colored people were set free, although they didn’t have as much rights as otherAmericans did. Colored women were the one’s that had no right at all during the time period. Women weren’t able to do anything, although a woman named Sojourner Truth, famous for a speech “Ain’t I AWoman?”. Was spoken in a women rights convention for everyone to hear what she had to say. Sojourner Truth’s speech is persuasive because she uses persuasive elements effectively and she provides supportfor her argument.
Truth believes that women were created for good and support. “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone,” (Truth 5). Truth pointsout that woman were made to be a part of something good. Women are able and capable of doing things that men can’t do. Truth uses the persuasive element ethical appeal because she believes that Godwanted women to make changes to the world, not just men. It shows value because she shares what she thinks about God creating women for a reason.
Truth amusingly disapproves that men only deserverights. “Then that little man in black there, he says women can’t have as much rights as men, ’cause Christ wasn’t a woman!” (Truth 4). Sojourner Truth shares to her audience how the priest was trying toconvince her by a religious opinion that had offended her. Although what’s important about the argument is that Truth made a rebuttal against the priest counter argument. “Where did your Christ comefrom? From God and woman! Man had nothing to do with him” (Truth 4). This is significant because Truth’s response was strong and confident. Proving the man how the only way Christ would be born, wouldbe by a man and a “woman”. Woman is being involved and there should be given importance to it.
