Philippines ranks no. 5 among the major producing countries in the world and no. 2 in exporting countries in 2004 Generates export earnings of more than $333 Million annually Directly employs more than 50,000 people in Cavendish farms alone

The other significant segments of the Banana Industry are Cardabafor Banana chips as export, Latundan and Lakatan largely for the local fresh fruit market There is also a small but growing export market for specialty banana such as Lakatan and Senorita.

Philippine production area ranked as the third largest in the world accounting for 8.5% of total world area. The Philippine production area trend is increasing at 2.2%/year (1990-2003) Southern Philippines occupies 48% of the Philippine banana production area in 2003

Industry Situation - Cavendish
Cavendish constitutes the bulk of the export earnings in banana ($333 M in2003 from 1,828,222.3 MT to 42 countries) – FAO Up by 7.8% in 2002 ($308.89 M) Government’s role in this industry is more on facilitation and regulation Organic and fair trade banana has a good market in Japan. Only MD New Corella Agri Ventures, Inc. (MD NCAVI) is organically certified in the country for export (JAS)
