Lent is the liturgical time of conversion, which makes the Church to prepare for the great feast of Easter. It is time to repent of our sins and to change some of us to be better and livecloser to Christ.
The practice of Lent dates from the fourth century, when there is a tendency to turn it into a time of penance and renewal for the whole Church, to the practice of fasting andabstinence. Preserved quite effective, at least initially, in the churches of the East, the practice of penance of Lent has been increasingly lighter in the West, but must observe a penitential spirit andconversion.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Palm Sunday. There are 40 days of preparation for Easter. The duration of forty days comes from several biblical references and proof symbolizesJesus 40 days in the desert before his ministry and the retirement of 40 years of Moses in the desert. They also symbolize the 40-day flood, plus 40 years of the Jewish people's march through thedesert and the 400-year-long stay of the Jews in Egypt. Throughout this time, the Catholic faithful are called to strengthen their faith through various acts of penance and reflection. Lent has five (5)plus Sunday Passion Sunday (six in total), whose readings the issues of conversion, sin, repentance and forgiveness are dominant. It is a sad time, but rather meditative and collected. It is, parexcellence, the time of conversion and penance of the liturgical year. Therefore, in the Catholic Mass is not sung "Gloria" at the end of the penitential rite (except Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord'sSupper), or the "Hallelujah" before the Gospel.
The liturgical color is purple this time it means mourning and penance. It is a time for reflection, repentance, spiritual conversion, a time ofpreparation for the Paschal Mystery.
