Every literary work is fictional, and has fictional characters involved. There characters are involved in the work for a reason, in other words, there is a purpose on including every single one ofthe characters. The purpose that the characters have in the literary work is that they symbolize and express different values and beliefs that influence what they say and do. These attitudes thatrepresent the purpose of the author are present in the whole development of the story, mainly crating conflicts between the characters, which can sometimes change the beliefs and values of them. AtholFugard, J.D Salinger and Ken Saro-Wiwa definitely incorporate values and beliefs in the different characters in their respective novels “Of Mice and Men”, “The catcher in the rye” and “Robert and thedog” as a technique to represent the global idea and to transmit the values through the characters involved. In other words, to represent the person’s inner thoughts, motivations and ideals, referringin this way to one of the main themes in both literary works.

In Master Harold and the boys, by Athol Fugard, Hally has his own belief towards life and his surroundings, believing mainly in hissuperiority towards the waiters, representing injustice, discrimination and prejudice. One of the waiters has the contrary belief of the master, representing inferiority. His values, in the other handare much. In this story we can see how a character may change his beliefs and values by being influenced by another character. Hally, who was friend of Sam when he was a little boy, changes hisattitude towards him when he comes to age, influenced mainly by his father, and finally treating the waiters like if they were by far inferior, like animals. This belief towards the waiters is related todiscrimination towards Negros in society, like it really happened in the apartheid, not with fictional characters but with real human beings.
