English in the modern world
In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) there were only six million speakers of English. Most of them lived in Great Britain. But today, in the reign of herdescendant, Queen Elizabeth II (1952- ) , there are many more speakers of English. And most of them do not live in Great Britain!
Three hundred million people speak English as their native language.English is their first language. They live in countries such as Britian. The United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Six hundred million people use English as an oficial, secondlanguage. They live in countries such as India, Pakistan and Nigeria.
But at least one hundread million people now study English as a Spain, Greece, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, China, Russia,Poland – in fact, almost everywhere.
Therefore, at least one thousand million people can read, speak, write and unferstand English today.
English is now an international language. In the modern world,people need English for work and for international communication. You can use English to help you meet people and to make new friends in every country of the world.
