Short Writing Assignment (3-4 typed pages, MLA format, 12 font, Times New Roman)

Iexpect that all papers you write for this class follow MLA (Modern Language Association) format. When you refer to a story in your paper (that is, when you quote), you need to follow the reference bythe page number. And I do expect you to refer fully to the stories. Without textual reference, you simply cannot prove your point. At the end of your paper, you need to attach a Works Cited page.There is a link to an MLA information site from our homepage.

***When you write about poetry, you reference the line numbers, not the page numbers.

Here are topics from which you may choose forthis assignment. Please note that we won’t have discussed the plays yet, but you are welcome to write about them. Lots of topics to choose from, but if you have an idea of your own, let me know:

1.Choose any one (or two or three) of the assigned poems and write an analysis focusing on the use of literary techniques. For example, you may want to examine the use of symbolism and/or imagery. You mayalso want to consider the use of diction, simile or metaphor (or other figures of speech) if relevant.

2. Choose any one (or two or three) of the assigned poems and write an analysis focusing onthe theme of the poem or poems.

3. Do a line by line reading of “Dover Beach,” Dulce et Decorum Est,” OR “My Last Duchess.” In the concluding paragraphs, examine the meaning that you make of thepoem. (That is, what does the poem mean to you? In this paper, your conclusion would allow you to use the “I” voice.)
