It was a cold day inside the cave where the Deer Family lived. Winter was coming soon and Mommy Deer had to go out and search for the food stock which will be eaten during winter. Daddy Deer was nowhere to be found, it was rumored that he had been killed by a hunter, so now it was all up to Mommy Deer to take care of their three deer daughters; Bipper Deer, Bacie Deer and Belly Deer.
BipperDeer stood by the window and watched gray, gloomy clouds float slowly across the sky. “Winter is so boring”, she signed.
“Yeah especially long winters”, added Bacie, her younger deer sister, Bacie looked out the winter next to Bipper. “We can’t even go out and play in his weather”.
Bipper walked over to the couch and laid down beside Bacie, the two deer girls watched their baby sister, Belly,happily play with a butterfly on the floor. “At least one of us doesn’t seem to mind the harsh weather”, Bipper said with a smile.
Suddenly Mommy Deer comes in and announces that she was going to spend the whole day searching for food to save up for winter, the girls were already wondering if that meant that they had to go search for food with their mother or if Mister Mole was going to come andbabysit.
“Bipper I trust you to be old enough to take care of your sisters” said Mommy Deer.
“Ohh of course Mom!” said Bipper, gleaming with pride at her new accomplishment.
After a short review of the rules Mommy Deer was off. Bipper was excited that her mother had entrusted her with her family, she was worried that she would disappoint her mom so she just wanted everything to be perfect.“Movie time!!” cried Bacie.
“Well I don’t know about you but I can’t watch a movie without a big bowl of popcorn”, said Bipper.
“Yeiiii, popcorn popcorn” chanted Belly.
Bipper went into the kitchen and started heating the pot and placing the corn seeds in it. Suddenly she heard a cry from Belly and went to check out what was wrong. Belly´s butterfly had flown away and she had started to cry.
“Ohdon’t worry Belly she will come back eventually” said Bipper trying to reassure her sister.
“Bipper come quick” yelled Bacie from the other room.
Bipper ran into the other room only to find her sister in front of their movie collection.
“I don’t know which movie to pick” Bacie said.
“Ohh just pick anything, just make sure it’s appropriate for Belly”
“So no hunting movies?” asked Bacie.
“No!”laughed Bipper.
The smell of burning suddenly entered the room.
“Ohh no the popcorn!” cried Bipper as she ran into the kitchen. Just as she swung the door open, smoke was pouring out of the room. Bipper started coughing but she found her way to the stove and turned off the popcorn.
“Well, that’s that for the popcorn”, said Bipper with a sad tone.
“Belly hungry” said Belly appearing out ofnowhere.
“Oh sure honey let me make you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich” said Bipper.
Bipper took out all the ingredients and started making her little sister her sandwich. Suddenly the telephone rang. Bipper ran to answer it.
“Hello?” asked Bipper.
“Hey honey its mom, is everything okay?”
“Oh hey mom yep everything is fine don’t worry”
“Are you sure?”
“Yep, nothing’s wrong”.
Just as Bippersaid this, Belly took the jar of jam and started spreading it all over herself. Bipper watched in horror but could move or say anything, her mom couldn´t know what was going on.
“You know that if its too much for you you can ask for help” asked her mom, not knowing what her daughters where up to.
“Mom, I told you Im almost grown up now, I can totally handle two little girls on my own”
Just as shewas saying this Belly finished spreading the whole jar of jam on to her and ran out of the room.
“Well…” Mommy Deer began.
“Yeah, well I have to go mom, bye” Bipper hanged up and ran after Belly.
She ran into the living room where Bacie was sitting in front of the tv with a worried look.
“I think I broke it” she said holding up a cassette.
