Holy Week
Holy week is the most important holiday in the Catholic calendar to celebrate the life passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. This is a time for reflection and worship with family. Thiscelebration is the last week of lent and starts with the Palm Sunday, in this day people have a lot of palms to represent the Christ’s triumphant march into Jerusalem and then they put this palmsback to the door because they believe that it represents protection.
The Catholic Church organizes traditional masses and processions which take place on Holy Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday andEaster Sunday. The procession is a very serious event, and spectator lines the streets to mourn and pray. Each procession includes majestic red and purple cloaks, fake blood, a crown of thorns andgrown men in robes dragging huge crucifixes along the dusty road.
On Holy Thursday is celebrated the Last Supper, this is the last meal that Jesus shared with his Twelve Apostles before his death. OnGood Friday people make many processions and pageants to represent the death of Christ, the participants dress up and act like armies of Roman soldiers and others who took part in Jesus journey likeVirgin Mary, Mary Magdalene and the apostles. In these days a Dry Law is in place, meaning that at midnight on Wednesday all bars and liquor stores close. Also, many people don’t swim in the ocean onFriday because they say that you can drown because God is angry and some of the more superstitious believe that you will become a fish if you get in the water on Holy Friday. It is also thought that theearth get hot, causing more earthquakes during this time. On Saturday, is a tradition that some people set on fire a puppet that represents the apostle Judas because he is the apostle who betrayedJesus and helps the Jerusalem authorities arrest him.
Easter Sunday is a happy day because Catholic people commemorate when Jesus was resurrected from the dead.
