Homework 2 Phisics 1
Magnitude | Unit name | Unit symbol | Expressed as base IS unit |
Frequency | Hertz | Hz | Hz=1s |
Amount of heat | Joule | J | J=kg∙m2s2 |
Electric conductance | Siemens | S |S=AV=AKg∙m2A∙s3=A∙A∙s3kg∙m2=A2∙s3Kg∙m2 |
Magnetic flow | Weber | Wb | Wb=kg∙m2A∙s2 |
We change from decimal to scientific notation by moving the decimal point just after the first digit in thenumber; this has to be a number between 1 and 9. We find the value to which the base 10 (x10) has to be elevated by counting the number of spaces that the decimal point was moved. If the movement wasto the left, the exponent is positive; if the movement was to the right, the exponent is negative.
Quantity | Scientific Notation |
a) 579 000 000 000 | 5.79×1011 |
b) 0.000 000 000 1 | 1.0×10-10|
c) 29 100 000 | 2.91×107 |
d) 0.034 | 3.4×10-2 |
e) 1 890 | 1.89×103 |
We change from scientific notation to decimal notation by doing the opposite from above. We have to move the decimalpoints the number of spaces that is in the exponent of the base 10. If the exponent is positive, the decimal point has to move to the right; if the exponent is negative, the decimal point has to bemoved to the left.
Scientific Notation | Decimal Notation |
a) 3.6x109 | 3,600,000,000 |
b) 1.8x10-6 | 0.0000018 |
c) 7.002x1012 | 7,002,000,000,000 |
d) 6.32x10-7 | 0.000000632 |
e) 2x10-1 |0.2 |
In order to sort these quantities from small to large it is necessary to express all the numbers in terms of the same units, in this case the units are meters.
Original | Ordered |
6km |3×10-5Mm1,000,000 m1 Mm = 30 m |
3x109mm | 400 m = 400 m |
8x105mm | 8×105 mm 1 m1000 mm = 800 m |
400m | 6 km 1000 m1 km= 6,000 m |
3x10-5Mm | 3×109 mm 1 m1000 mm = 3,000,000 m |
