Homosexualidad
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law was enacted by President Bill Clinton in 1993 as a compromise after his effort to end the ban of gays serving in the military” (Sherwell). The homosexual community, which is characterized by having different sexual preferences, began a battle against the new law, since 1993 when it went into effect this newlaw. Homosexuals community has expressed some ideas that seem are discriminative. Over fifteen years of struggle have achieved many of its goals, thanks to the many organizations for gay rights. The Mattachine Society, ONE, and Daughters of Bilitis, these organizations helped give a positive views in society about homosexuality, giving examples of how homosexuals were equal to every personheterosexual.
The modern movement for gay rights was the main piece for the gays. Thanks to this movement were able to obtain civil rights. This was the first major step in the gay community. But there was still the law "Don’t Ask Don’t Tell" that forced homosexuals keep their sexual preferences to serve in the military. The movement was a dispute, had points to his favor and discover, but in the endcould win. “The modern gay right movement was inspired by the civil right movement and by the women’s movement” (Baunach).
“Don't Ask, Don't Tell is a sensitive yet troubling concern at a time when our nation is engaged in a conflict that we must win” (Dumont, 2008).Our nation is not in position to lost time. And “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy only delays the opportunity for more people can toserve our nation. Doubts about homosexuality in the military come to the court, but is just whole process to know what is better for our nation. In court some people believe that homosexuality will destroy the military. This is not about destroy the Armed Forces, is about fairness and respect for all citizens. For all people is an honor to serve in the armed forces. But the lack of morality do notallow. Homosexuals were not incompatible with the military just are simply people with greats qualities.
In the field of homosexuality, discrimination is a very important factor. Is the obstacle that has to pass the gay community to be accepted into the armed forces. In the year 1974 was diagnosed homosexuality as a mental disorder by society, but thanks to increase gay right organizations wasdischarged this policy. The help of organizations served to the community and the world open their minds to accept homosexuals. By receiving the last 15 years the homosexual community is opening many paths to prosperity. But some people still object to accept homosexuals. These people do not take into account that every citizen of the United States of America has the same right to defend their nationand to get an honor of his country.
Pride of a person feels when defends his nation is indescribable. But not everybody can feel this feeling. The "legal discrimination" is allowed in the military which allows that homosexuals can be discriminated by their sexual preferences. Eventually, some people think homosexuality is a sin, but no person is free of sins. Then no one could work in themilitary. The gay rights movement opened many doors for the gay community. But still the war to finally get all the rights that heterosexual citizen can get. Homosexuals want to feel that honor the soldiers feel to defend their nation. For this reason and many more homosexuals want to get all civil rights.
“By the 1940s, the military classified homosexuality as a mental illness”(Galas, pp. 47-59). Butnow today we know better the definition of homosexuality. And we know that is not in regard to mental illness. Homosexuality is known to have sexual preferences for the same sex. And does not cause a damage to the operation and physical condition of a homosexual to work in the military.
“Gays defend themselves by arguing that homosexuality is a characteristic with which they are attached in the...
