The car was obviously traveling too fast when it passed the truck on a curve. It skidded, collided with a telephone pole, and crashed into the waves of the Pacific Ocean below.
The truck driver wasable to pull the two passengers –a man and a boy- from the car onto the beach. The police and an ambulance arrived quickly on the scene, but for the driver of the car, it was too late. The man wasdead, and the boy unconscious.
The ambulance rushed the boy to the nearest hospital. There the police officers who were investigating the accident looked through the papers they had found in the deadman’s car. “It looks like they were on their way to the airport. There are two tickets here for flight 561 to Singapore. Mr. Paul Cavendish… and James Cavendish. Must have been father and son. Theflight was at 7:15. They were probably afraid of arriving late. Some people never learn, do they? Better too late in this world than too early in the next.”
A nurse came into the waiting room. “How’s theboy, nurse?” “It’s too early to tell. They’ll have to operate. They’ve called in the best surgeon available.”
In the operating room, the surgeon was ready. But the surgeon took one look at the boyand said, “I can’t operate on this boy - he’s my son!”
