CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE KYOTO PROTOCOL
According to the definition of climate change which “is defined as a stable and durable change in the distribution of weather patterns over periods of timeranging from decades to millions of years.” (cambioclimaticogloba), is shown that many of these changes are produced directly or indirectly by the actions committed by human beings, especially thosethat produce the effect of greenhouse gases as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. The problem is that these actions cause global warming and some of its consequences are the continued rise insea levels, the expansion of tropical deserts and changes in rainfall patterns.
One of solutions to prevent or decrease these consequences is the creation of the Kyoto protocol which is “aninternational agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change” (unfccc.int) , and this agreement consist in to establish mechanisms for the reduction of different greenhousegas emissions in developed countries, the principal goal of this protocol is “to lower overall emissions from six greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, HFCs,and PFCs - calculated as an average over the five-year period of 2008-12. National targets range from 8% reductions for the European Union and some others to 7% for the US, 6% for Japan, 0% for Russia,and permitted increases of 8% for Australia and 10% for Iceland." The most important of the Kyoto Protocol is that made to encourage and raise awareness of the importance ofreducing emissions of greenhouse gases that have caused so much damage to our planet. It is also important to mention that this agreement demonstrated the ability of countries to create internationalrelations seeking a common goal that benefits the entire population.
