SECOND PROGRESS REPORT
* Green House Location
The surface of Mars can be divided into two roughly hemispherical zones by a great circle inclined about 30 ° to Ecuador. The southern half is composed of land carved by ancient craters dating from the early history of the planet. There is a major climatic event in the southern hemisphere between late spring and early summer when Mars dust stormsare so large as to obscure the planet's surface for weeks or even months. The dust in these clouds is very fine and takes a long time to dissolve. Therefore it is said that the highest temperatures of mars are the ones that are near the equator.
The northern half of Mars is less cratered surface, and therefore younger, supposedly composed of volcanic flows, but there is no evidence that there isregular volcanic activity anywhere in the world. With all the above information, we realized that the perfect location for our greenhouse serious in the northern part of Ecuador to take advantage of Mars being close to the high temperatures, and also it’s easier to find a crater to build an underground greenhouse.1
* Materials
The structure of our greenhouse, as it is planned to beunderground, it needs to have a special and very strong material in its surface, we plan to use some sort of metal that does not corrode, and the top doesn’t have to be with plastic as the power we are going to get from the sun. The greenhouse has to have special features; like that the structure needs to be special to bear the pressure of the planet and also secure for the oxygen that will be inside ofthe greenhouse not to go. Inside the greenhouse it needs to have different systems, as the ventilation system, which helps in having the oxygen and carbon dioxide in constant moving for the plants to live. We also need the life support system that is a group of devices that will allow a human being survive in space and one of the final system that we are going to use on the greenhouse is the watertreatment plant, a water treatment plants are those facilities that treat water, ground water or surface water, and produce potable water for public consumption or provide primary treatment and produce "industrial water.". All these systems as it need to be provided by the NASA. One last thing that we need to use for our greenhouse to be complete is the solar panels that we would use to bringenergy for the greenhouse.
* Importance in Recycling
Before knowing the importance and benefits of recycling and its relation to a better environmental condition, it is essential to understand what is recycling. Recycling refers to the process of collecting used materials which are usually considered as 'waste' and reprocessing them. The recycling process involves three stages. In the first stage,the old products are collected and processed, where they are sorted, cleaned and made ready for recycling or manufacturing new products. The second stage involves the manufacturing of new products from the raw material obtained by the processing of the old products. Finally, the process ends with the new product. But now let’s see why recycling is important.2
As the journey to mars is of threewhole years, it is impossible for the people that will live in the greenhouse to go to the earth to get new materials, that’s why it is important to recycle as much as they can, we have limited resources and we have to leverage resources. Another things that makes important the recycling is that it saves energy. When new products are manufactured from the raw material obtained from recycledproducts, it saves a lot of energy which is consumed for production. When new products are manufactured from 'virgin materials', the amount of energy consumed is much higher. Besides, the energy required to acquire and transport the 'virgin' raw materials from their natural sources is also saved. It also has economic benefits, recycling also helps in saving a lot of expense, required for the production...
