Deng Xiaoping, dubbed "the Little Helmsman" is chiefly remembered as the architect of reform and economic openness ("gaige Kaifang") that in 25 years has made China the second largest economy. Giving final shelvethe planned economy of Mao Zedong, Deng and the more reformist wing of the Communist Party of China designed the steps to enter the country a free market economy in a historic Central Committee meetings were held from 18 to December 22, 1978.Then was born the term "socialism with Chinese characteristics", coined by Deng and inspired by the economic miracles that have shaped the so-called "Asiantigers" (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea)."You have to make a revolution, and not mere amendments and makeup," said Deng this year, anticipating that there would be major changes, but only financially.
In September l976 Mao dies and opens a political war over the succession. In the struggle succeeds Deng justified by the need of China to introduce profound and pragmatic give responseto the needs of a population tired and longing for political stability and economic prosperity. Economic developments in China since the death of the "Great Helmsman", has been marked by the hallmark of his supreme and undisputed leader, Deng Xiaoping, who will be remembered as the father of reform. Deng led the nation on the path of peace and economic prosperity, freed of seizures and politicalcampaigns that had been imposed on China for decades. Deng, but pragmatic and concerned about the economic welfare of the population, was also a nationalist who saw in communism a useful tool to achieve regeneration of his country and did not believe that democracy was appropriate to resolve the political problems in China.30 years ago, in December l978 began a process of change that led to economicreform crucial for the economic future of China. Deng Xiaoping took major decisions that radically transformed China and opened a new chapter in its history. He put the country on the way out of underdevelopment, succeeding in imposing its economic modernization thesis based on external openness, free markets and the introduction of advanced technology. Deng Xiaoping died in Beijing on February19, 1997.
Chinese farmers, who at that time were more than 80 percent of the population (now around 60 percent) were the first beneficiaries of the reforms were allowed for the first time in decades cultivating the products they want and sell excess of the market share for "rich". The idea was not new and had been applied in a province (Sichuan, Deng's hometown), the reformist leader Zhao Ziyang, who would become the Little Helmsman right hand until 1989, he fell into disgrace for supporting protests Tiananmen. "Enrich yourselves!" Advised Deng in those early years, insisting she had to abandon the idealism of the Mao era and adopt more pragmatic, so we had to allow, for example, that some Chinese become rich before other.
Deng's suggestions, which under Mao would have been convicted ofbourgeois, were adopted enthusiastically by the Chinese, disenchanted by 10 years of chaotic Cultural Revolution (1966-76).The next step was to create a Special Economic Zone in which they begin to implement free market policies rather than in the rest of China: Shenzhen city (then a fishing village and now center of the Chinese technology industry), the ports of Shantou and Xiamen and HainanIsland, among others. In those same years began to emerge large conglomerates (such as CITIC, founded in 1979 by the "red capitalist" Rong Yiren): entrepreneurs began to be accepted in Chinese society. Deng also encouraged the opening of small shops across the country, and began the conversion of hundreds of outdated state enterprises, an arduous task that continues and has cost thousands of jobs,...
