Russian Empire
Russia is a country in Eurasia. At 17,075,400 square kilometers it´s the largest country in the world, covering more than one eighth of the Earth's inhabited landarea. Russia is also the eighth most populous nation with 143 million people. It extends across the whole of northern Asia and 40% of Europe, spanning nine time zones andincorporating a wide range of environments and landforms. Russia has the world's largest reserves of mineral and energy resources and is the largest oil producer and secondlargest natural gas producer globally.
The freedom in the Russian Empire was limited; there was serfdom, which means the status of peasants under feudalism, specifically relatingto manorialism. It was a condition of bondage or modified slavery which developed primarily during the High Middle Ages in Europe and lasted in some countries until the mid-19th century.
Fromits initial creation until the 1905 Revolution, the Russian Empire was controlled by its emperor as an absolute monarch, under the system of tsarist autocracy. After theRevolution of 1905, Russia developed a new type of government which became difficult to categorize. In the Almanac de Gotha for 1910, Russia was described as "a constitutionalmonarchy under an autocratic tsar." This contradiction in terms demonstrated the difficulty of precisely defining the system, essentially transitional and meanwhile sui generis, established inthe Russian Empire after October 1905. Before this date, the fundamental laws of Russia described the power of the Emperor as "autocratic and unlimited."
