Independence In The Child
Role of the Adult:
The prepared adult creates the link between the children and the environment. It is her job to see that points of contact are established between the environment andthe children.
* Observe and present. This method wouldn’t work if the adult doesn’t keenly observe. After observing, the adult presents. The prepared adult must put the child in touch with theenvironment and when this is achieved, become passive. She must observe the children continuously so that she doesn’t fail to see who needs support.
* Establish guidelines. Children needguidelines, expectations. This is how they learn to adapt to society. Guidelines are based in 3 things: Respect for the environment, Respect for yourself, and Respect for others. These guidelines must be as fewas possible, they must be easily understood and they must be reasonable. The guidelines should always be based on respect and social collision.
* Protect freedom and rights of children. Everychild has the right for a presentation from the adult. We must protect the freedom of children by putting them in touch with the environment and when this goal is achieved, become passive observers.
*The child seeks for independence of body and mind by means of work
* It is only through freedom and experience that the child will develop.
* Four Planes – Camillo Grazzini: We must considerthe human personality and not a method od education. She suggests that we should, instead, speak of “help given in order that the human personality may achieve its independence”
* Independence if weremove obstacles and give children the correct tools
* Encourage children to make wise choices: ask, what do you want for lunch apple or banana? Would you like to clean after or before dinner?* Personal care and hygene: bathing, dressing, toileting, etc.
* Experience logical (and natural) consequences once the child makes a choice, allow his to experience the consequence (good or bad)...
