ANTECEDENTES HISTORICOS:
COMO ERA LA VIDA DE LOS INDIGENAS
La mayoría de los indígenas vivía a nivel de subsistencia, labrabanpequeñas parcelas de tierra donde sembraban maíz, frijol y chile para el autoconsumo o para vender en los mercados regionales, y poseía modestos rebaños de ganado menor, ovejuno y caprino y huertas con calabazas, chiles, chayotes y árboles frutales. Un sector importante no tenía acceso a la tierra y demás medios de producción y conformaba una especie de proletariado rural, que necesitaba alquilar sufuerza de trabajo para subsistir.
Los indios no eran un grupo homogéneo, pertenecían a diferentes etnias, con sus propias lenguas, costumbres y tradiciones religiosas. Aunque compartían muchos rasgos culturales y otras características carecían de identidad común. De hecho el concepto de “indio” no era propio, sino acuñado por los españoles para reconocer a los nativos y diferenciarlos de losespañoles, negros y mezclas.
Los indígenas se incorporaron al movimiento insurgente por varias razones y de manera voluntaria, aunque algunos decían estar borrachos al momento de reclutarse. Lo hacían de manera individual o por grupos y tenían en promedio 30 años de edad.
