The necklace
Mr. Loisel worked as a clerk .

Mathilde borrows something from her friend, whose name is Jeanne Forestier.
She borrows a diamond necklace
The Loisels spend a lot of money to replace the necklace. Theyspend 40,000 francs.

Mme. Forestier did not recognize Mme. Loisel because her appearance had changed so much. Mme. Loisel had to introduce herself.

The Loisels were able to talk the jeweler into a lower price. (Theybargained with him, perhaps telling him their story.)

M. Loisel seemed content with his life. He never complainedabout his situation in life. He never made comments to his wife about her desire for finer things. He also thinks that getting the invitation to the ball is a great honor, not a problem, as his wife does.
