4. “The Influence of Modern Art”
Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, and Expressionism – each contributed to graphic design theory and history, each are still seen today in designs all over theworld and field. Each one influenced graphic design in one way or another.
Cubism introduced the concept of nature into the paintings. Pablo Picasso is to thank, or blame for spreading it and making itas famous and popular as it is today. Cubism included ideas from ancient Iberian and African tribal art all mixed into creating geometric and mostly abstract plains. The classical human figure wasbroken and incorporated with paper collage elements. Cubism gave a new approach to visual composition, but the most important characteristic and aspect used today by graphic designers is the geometricabstraction.
Futurism was popularized by Filippo Marinetti. He created a typographic revolution by using letters to express feelings. An example of this is the way he used italics to resemblesomething quick or fast, and big bold letters to represent violence or anger. Words became dynamic and had a bigger meaning than that of the word itself. Nonlinear composition ruled the pages; capitalizationof the words became unimportant, it was either all capitalized or nothing. Decoration was declared absurd and the spacing between the words and their size had a greater impact on the message than thewords themselves. Futurism forced graphic designers “to rethink the very nature of the typographic word and its meaning.”
Dada claimed to be anti-art and had strong negative elements. Absolutefreedom was its main goal and assaulted the traditional. Photomontages were a main characteristic of the dada movement followed by collages and complex designs of nonsense. This way some anti-warpropaganda for campaigns were created, political illustrations and cartoons were an outstanding topic, especially during World War II.
