EL MECANISMO DEL DESARROLLO (Delval 1994). En el desarrollo humano:
1) A lo largo del tiempo podemos observar cómo se va produciendo en el niño una serie de cambios algunos de loscuales resultan muy evidentes. Por ejemplo su tamaño, su peso, van aumentando rápidamente en los primeros años. En un determinado momento adquiere el lenguaje y empieza a pronunciar palabras y va ampliando su vocabulario .cambian también sus capacidades motoras corren, saltan, etc., también va aumentando su capacidad de recordar cosas. Todos estos cambios pueden ser descriptos como cambioscuantitativos que son fácilmente observables.
Pero oros cambios son más sutiles y resultan más difícil de describir. Por ejemplo los niños durante el primer año y medio de vida no poseen la capacidad de lenguaje van a ser capaces de actuar simbólicamente sobre las cosas. También los problemas va cambiando a lo largo de la vida. Estos cambios pueden denominarse cualitativos.
