I ntroduction
Making Sense of PhrasalVerbs presents a selection of the most useful and
f requently used phrasal verbs in the English language. It avoids the use of
g rammatical classifications because such classifications are often more
c omplicated and difficult than the phrasal verbs they are used to teach.
I nstead, the aim is to increase the learner's confidence by presenting phrasal
verbs in a lively and straightforward wayusing illustrations and questionprompts.
Making Sense of Phrasal Verbs can be used for self-study, for pairwork, for
c onventional class or group teaching, and as a reference book. It is intended
for intermediate students of English as a second or foreign language.
S tudents studying for the First Certificate Examination will find the book
e specially useful.
The book contains twenty units,each of which introduces and practises six
separate phrasal verbs. At the back of the book there is a reference section in
w hich the phrasal verbs are listed in alphabetical order.
