What is BPM? Again!

Recently I read this statement: “A healthcare insurance company has made a significant investment instreamlining its claims processing and adjudication system, anticipating improved employee productivity through redesigned processes and automated orchestration using business process management (BPM).” Whatdo you think is wrong with it? Ok, I’ll give you a hint - redesigned processes and automated orchestration using business process management (BPM) implies that BPM is a technology. BPM is NOT atechnology. In case you missed my blog defining BPM, I’ll repeat part of it here.
BPM is management philosophy. We believe BPM concepts and principles are applied to building, managing, and governing anorganization’s cross-functional, core business processes. These concepts and principles,
* Help you achieve strategic business objectives by directing the allocation of enterprise resources to deployefficient business processes that generate customer value,
* Focus on driving overall bottom line success by integrating verticals and optimizing core work (e.g. order-to-cash, integrated productdevelopment, integrated supply chain),
* Combine business expertise, technology, and software to facilitate innovation and optimization, and
* Govern cross-functional processes throughouttheir lifecycle by ensuring that the right people, with the right information, are using the right technology to achieve business objectives.
* Advocate continuous improvement, perpetually increasingvalue generation and sustaining market competitiveness (or dominance) of the organization.
Inappropriate or improper use of the term Business Process Management tends to muddy the waters by leadingpeople to think throwing technology at a business problem will remake their enterprise into a world-class, competition eating, customer focused, agile business. I suggest to you that won’t happen....
