INTRODUCTION

Industrial engineering is the science that is based on planning, directing and controlling the analysis of different methods, processes and productionsystems in order to optimize the use of human talent, equipment and materials. Furthermore, studies finished production improvements and disposal plants.

Similarly, plans, coordinates and directs the activities taking place in the actual training companies, in order to eliminate disruption and stoppage of labor and unnecessary material.

This paper expresses the definition of industrialengineering, its history and development, as well as the fields of application and job market, and describes the profile of a professional engineer.

1. Definition of Industrial Engineering.

Industrial Engineering is the science that studies the design, implementation and operation of systems comprised of human, material, technological and financial resources to improve productivity, efficiencyand quality of production of goods and services that meet the needs and demands of society. Also the engineer analyzes and specifies integrated components of personnel, machinery, and resources to create efficient and effective systems that produce goods and services beneficial to mankind.

The flexibility of production processes in all sectors of economic activity, generating value, thedevelopment of technologies for efficient use of resources and continuous quality improvement, are challenges facing the industrial engineer to meet the needs of a global society.

2. History and Evolution of Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering arises from the need to train professional persons than, apart from understanding the terms of the other specialists, could control processesas providing all the necessary inputs for production, schedule, monitor operational staff, maintain the equipment and worry about raising work efficiency. In general, all these tasks came to play engineer since its creation.

Fathers of Industrial Engineering.

Frederick Taylor (1856 – 1915): was an American engineer and economist, developer of scientific management. In 1878 he made his firstcomments on the work industry in the steel industry. To this, followed a series of analytical studies, about runtimes and remuneration for job. Its main points were scientifically determine standard work, create a mental revolution and a functional labor through various concepts that are intuited from his publication in 1903 called “Shop Management” in which principles are described as:standardization tools, costing methods, selection of employees for tasks, among others.

Henri Fayol (1841-1925): mining engineer born in Constantinople, made great contributions to the various administrative levels. Furthermore, Fayol divided the industrial and commercial operations in six groups: Technical, Commercial, Financial, Administrative, Security and Accounting.

He is regarded as the fatherof the modern theory of operational management. He was CEO of one of the most important industrial complexes, mining - metallurgical French and wrote his report as an analysis of the structure and process of direction, as seen from their level.

In 1932, the term "method engineering" was used by HB Maynard and his associates, from there, the methods and techniques of work simplification, had...
