Abstract

In the manufacturing of high quality casting products (mechanical properties according to each application) it’s possible to use computersimulation techniques to evaluate the effects of design changes, equipments or process, without having to use the trials and error as evaluation techniques, to achieve this is needed to have a welldefined heat transfer coefficients of the solidification process to improve the results compared with real castings.

The objective of this study is to define the heat transfer coefficients (HTC's) ofan aluminum alloy type 319 in contact with H-13 steel, using experimental molds (chills) instrumented with thermocouples that record the thermal history during the pouring and solidification of thecastings. The chills were placed on a sand mold called “wedge” to pour the samples, controlling process variables such as: chemical composition of molten metal, temperatures, pouring time andthermocouples position.

From information generated on thermocouples, the heat transfer coefficients were calculated with the use of inverse method in the software Magma. Once having the heat transfercoefficients defined, they were applied in the process of simulation of productive molds that use alloy 319, high correlation has been achieved when compared with the analysis of defects generated duringsolidification, study with thermocouples in the mold and castings, metallographic analysis (SDAS - secondary dendritic arm spacing), etc.
