DEDICATION

Professor Lynn S. Beedle

This edition of the AISC Specification is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Lynn S. Beedle,
University Distinguished Professor at Lehigh University. Dr. Beedle served as a faculty
member at Lehigh University for 41 years and won a very large number of professional
and educational awards,including the 1973 T.R. Higgins Award and the 2003 Geerhard
Haaijer Award from AISC. He was a major contributor to several editions of the AISC
Specification and a long-time member of the AISC Committee on Specifications. He was
instrumental in the development of plastic design methodologies and its implementation
into the AISC Specification. He was Director of the Structural Stability Research Councilfor 25 years, and in that role fostered understanding of various stability problems and
helped develop rational design provisions, many of which were adopted in the AISC
Specifications. In 1969, he founded the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat
and succeeded in bringing together the disciplines of architecture, structural engineering, construction, environment, sociology and politics,...
