Business letters are commonly used for job offers, requests for information, or as a letter of introduction. In this exercise you will write a business letter. Business lettersmust contain:
1. A heading, the address of the business, a greeting, a body, a conclusion, and a signature.
2. Formal, polite language with a clear purpose with relevant backgroundinformation.
3. Standard business formatting with consistent spacing and indentations.
Objectives:
* Students will be able to write and type a formal business letter, using the standard block-styleformat that is accepted by most businesses.
* Students will be able to define and label parts of a formal business letter. Gain increased oral and written communications skills.
* Demonstratecommunication skills in group situations.
Exercise:
Write in pairs a business letter.
Follow these steps:
1. Choose a topic and an organization of interest to you and select an organizationwith which to research and work. Search the internet, phone book, newspaper classifieds or a business directory to find the address of a business you'd like to contact.
2. Identify your purpose.Remind yourself of the letter's purpose by writing a purpose statement and placing it near you as you write.
3. Note questions you may want to ask in your letter. This information should beincluded in the letter to the organization.
4. Write the letter.

1. Make sure the letter contains all essential parts of a business letter.
2. The letter shouldhave appropriate greetings and closings for a business letter, and the body of the letter should have a professional tone.
3. Be clear on your purpose. Explain what you want the letter recipient todo, if anything. Do you want an interview, talk on the phone, or gather information, for example.
