“Advancements” in Transportation

n the late 1980s, the city of Beijing had six million cyclists and only afew thousand cars. There were wide cycle lanes and plenty of convenient parking for bicycles. If your bicycle got a flat tire, there were sidewalk repair shops everywhere. Everything—from food and clothing to heavy items like refrigerators and washing machines—was delivered either by bicycle or by some other vehicle without a motor. Consequently, the air was free of the pollution that makes mostmodern cities so unpleasant and unhealthy. In Beijing today, bicycles have been joined by over a million cars, trucks, and motorbikes. The air quality is no longer acceptable, and there are now sidewalk
