THE GRAND CANYON
The canyon was created by the Colorado River, whose course undermined the ground for millions of years. It is about 446 km in length, with ranges of between 6-29 km wide and reaches depths of over 1600 m. About 2000 million years of Earth history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries and tributaries cut layerafter layer of sediment while the Colorado Plateau rose.
Most of the sedimentary rocks that can be seen in the Grand Canyon range from 2000 million years old from the shale located in the bottom of the Inner Gorge to the 230 million year old limestone of 'Lucas'. Most of the strata were deposited in warm shallow seas in the area near the coast and in the coastal marshes that the sea was repeatedadvances and retreats of the sea. The major exception is the Coconino sandstone that was deposited in the same way in the desert dunes.
The great depth of the Grand Canyon and especially the height of its strata (most of which formed below sea level) can be attributed to the 1500-3000 m elevation of the Colorado Plateau, which began production rise nearly 65 million years, this elevation occurredat different stages in a continuous process. The lifting process increased stream gradient of the Colorado River and its tributaries, increasing its speed and ability to penetrate the rock.
The drainage area of the Colorado River (which is part of the Grand Canyon) was formed 40 million years ago, while the Grand Canyon is probably less than six million years ago (taking place most of the erosionprocess in the last two million years). The result of this erosion are some of the most complete geologic columns on the planet. The river is now actively eroding its banks, exposing increasingly older rocks.
The more humid weather conditions that occurred during the glaciations increased the amount of water collected by the drainage area of the Colorado River. The consequence was that the...
