History of basketballThe basketball was born as a response to the need for any winter sport in the YMCA school in Massachusetts. Professor at the University of Illinois (MA) James Naismith, (a physical education teacher) wasentrusted the mission in 1891 to devise a game that could play indoors, because the winters in the area hampered the realization of any outdoor activity.Naismith analyzed the sports that were practiced at the time, whose dominant feature was the force or physical contact, and thought of something sufficiently active, which required more skill than strength and not having much physical contact. TheCanadian recalled an old childhood game called "duck on a rock" (The duck on a rock), which was to try to reach an object placed on a rock by throwing a stone. Naismith asked the manager of the school boxes of 50 cm. in length but all he got were some baskets of peaches, who commanded hang on the railings of the upper gallery surrounding the gym, to a certain height.Main rules of basketballJames Naismithdevised a set of thirteen rules for the fledgling sport. These were:1. The ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.2. The ball can be beaten in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist.3. A player can not run the ball. The player must throw it from the place where you take it.4. The ball must be held with or hands. The arms or body must not be used forholding.5. Not allowed to carry the shoulder, holding, pushing, striking or tripping an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul, the second shall disqualify him until you get a basket, or, if there was evident intent to cause injury, for the rest of the party. Do not allow the replacement of the offender.6. A foul is striking the ball with the fist, violationsof Rules 3 and 4 and described in Rule 5.7. If a team makes three consecutive fouls (without the opponent has made none in this range), there will be a point to their opponents.8. The points will be achieved when the ball is thrown or beaten from the runway, falls into the basket and stays there. If the ball rests on the edge and an opponent moves the basket will count as one point.9. When theball goes out of bounds, be thrown into the field and played by the first person to touch it. If in doubt, the referee tosses the ball straight into the field. The thrower has five seconds. If it takes longer, the ball passes the opponent.10. The umpire, "umpire" punish the players and shall note the fouls, also notify the "referee" (referee, see next point) when a team commits three consecutivefouls.
