Ingles: uso del artículo "the"
1. Usamos “the” para referirnos a algo conocido por el oyente:
I bought a radio and a CD player, but the radio didn’t work (la radio que ya mencioné) The women over therework with my sister (las mujeres que ves allí)
2. Usamos “the” con superlativos:
It’s the best restaurant in town.
3. Usamos “the” en generalizaciones con nombres contables en singular (parahablar en general de una clase de cosas):
Who invented the telescope? I can’t play the piano. The tiger is in danger of extinction.
4. NO usamos “the” en generalizaciones con nombres plurales eincontables:
I like cars (not … the cars) ( los coches en general) but: The cars that we saw were very old (unos coches concretos) Books are expensive (not … the books) but: The books I bought were notexpensive He collects antique clocks. (not … the antique clocks) but: The antique clocks in this shop are very valuable.
5. Algunos sustantivos de lugares de uso habitual no llevan “the” después depreposición:
to / at/ from … school / university / college / church / work at / from … home to / in / out of … prison / hospital / bed
Sin embargo estas expresiones llevan “the” cuando hablamos deesos lugares con un uso distinto del habitual:
She’s in prison (she is a prisoner) but: She works as a cleaner in the prison He had to go to hospital (he’s ill) but: The workmen went to the hospitalto repair the roof
6. Otras expresiones sin “the”:
on holiday by car/ bus / plane to / at / after … breakfast/ lunch / dinner at Easter / Christmas at night
7. Nombres propios de lugares: Sinartículo: Continents, most countries: Africa, Germany, Peru (but: The Netherlands) States, counties: Texas, Oxfordshire, Normandy Towns: Sydney, Prague Most streets: Fifth Avenue, Oxford Street. Lakes,most mountains: Lake Superior, Everest, Mont Blanc Town+ buildings Oxford University, York Airport
