PREPARATION FOR A BUSINESS MEETING.
Preparing a business meeting with a anew client is not an easy task. First, you have to look into the companyyou are going to do business with. It is very important to know your client well, so you don´t run into any undesirable surprise. After collecting the information, you must prepare an agenda and go over it with all the participants. Set the objectives of the meeting and the goals you want to accomplish.
If you come across with any difficulty, you may have to decide if you put off the meeting fora further date or continue on.
When the participants of the meeting show up, show them into the meeting room and ask them to take a seat and wait on them. They may want a cup of coffe or a glass of water to relax.
Don´t worry. Remember you took care of all the details and the meeting will be a success.
PHRASAL VERBS.
A verbs is considered to be a phrasal verb if it consists of two or morewords.
One of these words is always a verb, the other may be:
1.- an adverb as in THROW AWAY,
2.- a apreposition as in LOOK INTO, or
3.- both an adverb and a preposition as in PUT UP WITH.
The meaning of a phrasal verb is ofter quite different from the meaning of the verb on its own.
Foe example, LOOK INTO= investigate, and LOOK AFTER= take care of. These two have quite separate meanings fromLOOK. In fact, many phrasal verbs are idiomatic.
An idiom, also called idiomatic expression, is a fixed group of words with a second meaning, which is different from the meanings of the individual words.
There are four types of phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs can be separable or inseparable and they can take an object or not. Here is a guide to the basics of phrasal verbs.
1.- a phrasal verb isa verb plus a preposition or adverb which creates a meaning different from the original verb.
example: ran into my teacher at the library yesterday. Run + into = meet.
My brother ran away when he was 13. Run + away = leave home.
2.- some phrasal verbs are intransitive. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object. Remember that an object is the part of the sentence that receivesdirectly or indirectly the action of the verb.
Example: the plane suddenly took off. “take off” cannon take an object.
3.- some phrasal verbs are transitive. A transitive verb can be followed by an object. The object receives the action of the verb directly or indirectly.
Example: I put off the meeting. “Meeting” is the object of “put off”
4.- some transitive phrasal verbs are separable. Theobject is placed between the verb and the preposition.
Example: I made a story up to convince my mother to let me go.
She picked the clothes up.
5.- some transitive phrasal verbs are inseparable. The object is placed after the preposition.
Example: I ran into and old friend yesterday.
They are looking into the problem.
6.-some transitive phrasal verbs can take an object in bothplaces.
Example: I picked the clothes up from the floor. OR I picked up the clothes from the floor.
7.-NOTE: although many phrasal verbs an take an object in both places, you must put the object between the verb and the preposition if the object is a pronoun.
Example: I looked the number up in the phone book.
OR
I looked up the number in the phone book.
This is correct: I looked it upin the phone book.
This is incorrect: I looked up it in the phone book.
