As a hunter, ambush predator, the cougar pursues a wide variety of prey. Its primary food is ungulates such as deer, particularly in the northern part of its range, but also huntingguanacos and camels as small species such as insects and rodents. It prefers habitats with dense vegetation during the hours of stalking, but can live in open areas.

The cougar is territorial andhas a low population density. The extent of their territory depends on the vegetation and the abundance of prey.
