PART I. THE HISTORY OF HAMBURGERS
A. Read the passage carefully.
The History of Hamburgers
A hamburger is a sandwich with cooked beef on a bun. People usually put condiments on top of a burger, like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. They also put topping on the burger, like onions, lettuce, andtomato. Burgers often come with a side of French fries, onion rings, or potato chips. Do you know where hamburgers come from?
Hamburgers started in Rome, Italy, in early 1300s. It was dangerous for poor people to cook at home. People sold meat from outdoor stands, so it became popular to go out for food. Hamburgers also started in Russia. People carried patties of lamb´s meat on long trips byhorse. They ate it “on the road,” so they didn´t have to get off their horses. They brought this food to Moscow. The Russian brought the patties to Hamburg, Germany. Ships sailed from Hamburg to New York, people called the patties Hamburg Steaks.
In New York, people didn´t use lamb´s meat. They used pork and beef. The pork or beef patties came on bread. People called these Hamburger Sandwiches. In1916, Walter Anderson invented the bun. This led to the modern hamburger. In 1921, Anderson started White Castle, popular restaurants that sell hamburgers.
In the mid-1950s, the fast-food hamburgers became very popular. Ray Kroc bought hamburger stands from the McDonald brothers in California. Today, McDonalds, restaurants are in over 120 countries, and they serve over 50 million people everyday.
The cheeseburger is a popular type of the hamburger. In 1924, Lionel Sternberger was 16, and he worked in his father´s restaurant. He placed a slice of American cheese on a hot burger. The cheeseburger was invented!
Today the hamburger comes in many forms. Beef is the usual meat on hamburgers, but there are also turkey burgers, veggie burgers (patties made out of mostly vegetables), andtofu burgers. Rice burgers are popular in many Asian countries. Today, hamburgers are popular all over the world.
