History of the conservation in Mexico
The concern for the environment in Mexico is not recent. Since pre-Hispanic times there were political leaders who established rules for environmentalprotection. One of them was the Chichimeca prince Nopaltzin, in the century XIII, it was him the one who forbade the lighting of fires in the mountains and in the fields without a permit. Netzahualcoyotl, onhis account, restricted the zones where people could cut trees and created protected areas.
After the conquest, the Spanish crown tried to protect the forests for economical reasons. That meant that,they feared that the wood which was used in the construction of the buildings and ships or in the exploitation of mines would be over.
In the independent period, the Mexican naturalists began to callthe attention about the importance of the forests in the regulation of the climate and in its action to avoid floods and erosions. These studies led to different presidents of the Republic to enforcelaws and regulations for protection. For example, Benito Juarez in 1861, enacted the first national forest law by council of Ignacio Ramirez, who belonged to the Mexican association of Geography andStatistics. This statute demanded woodworkers to plant ten trees for each one they would cut. Eventually, in 1894, Porfirio Diaz enacted a forest law in which its most important dispositionsauthorised the government to establish forest reserves in the national lands. In 1898, El Mineral de Chico, in the state of Hidalgo was announced to be a national forest. Diaz’ decision was influenced byMiguel Angel de Quevedo, also known as the tree apostle, an engineer who dedicated his life to the care of the forests.
At the same time, while in the world the evidences of the occurrences of revolutionwere spreading around, Alfonso Luis Herrera, understood the importance of studying species not only in the spatial point of view, but also in the temporal, and in the wide relationships developed...
