People have always been interested in sleep. Shakespeare's Hamlet had dreams that disturbed his sleep. Sigmund Freud started a new profession with his work on the meaning of dreams.
Although mostpeople sleep about eight hours a night, people with sleep disorders may sleep much less or much more. Modern science sees sleep as an active process, with its own stages and rhythms.
The most commonsleep disorder is insomnia, the inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep. At one time or another, most people have probably had insomnia. Insomnia is not itself a disease, but it may be a symptom ofsome other disease or problem. People with different "biological clocks" may have insomnia. For example, a night person may say that he is at his best during the night and feels slow and tired duringthe day. Insomnia can cause more insomnia. A person who is tired during the day because he cannot sleep at night may become afraid at bedtime: this dear can make his problem even worse.
Narcolepsy isanother sleep disorder. Narcolepsy is less common than insomnia but can be more dangerous. A narcoleptic cannot stay awake during the day, no matter how much sleep he has had. He suffers from "sleepattacks" sudden, uncontrollable urges to fall asleep no matter what the situation. He may fall asleep while eating, or talking to his boss, or even while driving. In addition to sleep attacks thenarcoleptic cannot control, he is also able to fall asleep when he wants to, much more quickly than an average person. An average person needs about fifteen minutes to fall asleep at a time when he doesn'tusually sleep. Buy not the narcoleptic. The narcoleptic can fall asleep in less than two minutes whenever he wants to. No matter what time of the day it is or how much sleep he has had before.Scientists believe that in the narcoleptic, one stage of sleep is out of sleep is out of balance and cannot be controlled by the waking mind.
