Study this example s i t u a t i o n : Sarah is ¡n her car. She is o n her w a y r o vvork. She is d r i v i n g t o w o r k . This mcans: she is d r i v i n g non; at the time oí speaking. T h e a c t i o n is ñor finished. Am/is/are + -ing is the present I he/she/it vve/yoii/they a m (= I ' m ) is (= he's etc.) are (= vve'rc etc.) continuous: driving vvorking do i n g etc.

T h e a c t i o n is n o t necessarily h a p p e n i n g at the t i m e o í speaking. For example: Steve is talkíng t o a friend o n the p h o n e . H e says:

Steve is not reading the book at the time o í speaking. H e means t h a t he hasstarted i t , b u t has n o t finished i t yet. H e is i n the m i d d l e o í reading i t . Some mí)re examples: • Kate wants t o w o r k in Italy, so shes l e a r n i n g ftalían.
