What are phrasal verbs? / ¿Qué eson los Phrasal verbs?

A phrasal verb is a verb plus a preposition or adverb which creates a meaning different from the original verb. / Un phrasal verb es un verbo acompañado de una preposición o de un advervio, “los cuales juntos crean un significado diferente al del verbo original”. Example:
* I ran into my teacher at the movies last night. run + into =meet
* He ran away when he was 15. run + away = leave home

Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object. /Algunos phrasal verbs son intransitivos (se usan sin complement). Un verbo intransitive no puede ser seguido por un objeto. Example:
* He suddenly showed up. "show up" cannot take an object

Some phrasal verbs are transitive. Atransitive verb can be followed by an object. / Algunos phrasal verbs son transitivos. Un verbo transitivo puede ser seguido de un objeto. Example:
* I made up the story. "story" is the object of "make up"

Some transitive phrasal verbs are separable. The object is placed between the verb and the preposition. In Phrasal Verb list this verbs are mark with a * between the verb and the preposition/ adverb. / Algunos phrasal verbs transitivos son separables. El objeto se coloca entre el verbo y la proposición. En la lista de verbos se marca con un * entre el verbo y la preposición. Example:
* I talked my mother into letting me borrow the car.
* She looked the phone number up.

Some transitive phrasal verbs are inseparable. The object is placed after the preposition. In thisPhrasal Verb list inseparable phrasal verbs are marked by placing a + after the preposition / adverb. / Algunos phrasal verbs transitivos son inseparables. El objeto se localiza después de la preposición. En la lista de phrasal verb se marcan con un signo de + después de la preposición o el verbo. Example:
* I ran into an old friend yesterday.
* They are looking into the problem.

Sometransitive phrasal verbs can take an object in both places. In this Phrasal Verb list, such phrasal verbs are marked with both * and + / Algunos phrasal verbs pueden tomar un objeto en ambos lugares. En esta lista de phrasal verb, estos verbos son marcados con * y +. Example:
* I looked the number up in the phone book.
* I looked up the number in the phone book.

WARNING! Although manyphrasal verbs can take an object in both places, you must put the object between the verb and the preposition if the object is a pronoun. / ADVERTENCIA. Aunque muchos phrasal verbs pueden tomar un objeto en ambos lugares, se debe poner el objeto entre el verbo y la preposición si el objeto es un pronombre. Example:
* I looked the number up in the phone book.
* I looked up the number inthe phone book.

Phrasal Verbs List

Phrasal verbs are usually two-word phrases consisting of verb + adverb or verb + preposition. Think of them as you would any other English vocabulary. Study them as you come across them, rather than trying to memorize many at once. Use the list below as areference guide when you find an expression that you don't recognize. The examples will help you understand the meanings. If you think of each phrasal verb as a separate verb with a specific meaning, you will be able to remember it more easily. Like many other verbs, phrasal verbs often have more than one meaning.
This list shows about 200 common phrasal verbs, with meanings and examples. Only the mostusual meanings are given. Some phrasal verbs may have additional meanings.
As well as learning their meanings, you need to learn how to use phrasal verbs properly. Some phrasal verbs require a direct object (someone/something), while others do not.
